How Do I Know If My Brakes Need to Be Replaced?

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Knowing the warning signs can save you from a dangerous situation — and from a much more expensive repair down the road.

The most obvious sign: that squealing noise

Brake pads are manufactured with a small metal wear indicator built in. When your pads wear down to a certain thickness, that indicator starts making contact with the rotor — producing a high-pitched squeal or screech when you brake. This is intentional. It’s your brake system telling you it’s time.

Don’t ignore that sound. Once the pads wear through completely, the metal backing plate contacts the rotor directly — which is where you get grinding. At that point, your rotors are likely being damaged with every stop.

7 signs your brakes need attention

1. Squealing or squeaking when you brake. Early warning sign. Usually means your pads are getting thin.
2. Grinding when you stop. Metal on metal. Your pads are gone. Come in immediately — every stop is damaging your rotors further.
3. A soft or spongy brake pedal. The pedal goes too far down before you feel braking force. This can indicate air in the brake lines, low brake fluid, or a failing master cylinder.
4. Your car pulls to one side when braking. Could be a stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or a brake hose issue. Your stopping ability is compromised.
5. Vibration or pulsating through the brake pedal. Almost always warped rotors. The rotor isn’t perfectly flat anymore, so you feel it pulse as it rotates.
6. It takes longer to stop than it used to. Known as brake fade. Can indicate worn pads, glazed rotors, or contaminated brake fluid.
7. The brake warning light is on. Some vehicles monitor pad wear electronically. If this light comes on, get it inspected.

How long do brake pads actually last?

It varies more than most people expect — anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 miles depending on your driving habits, vehicle weight, and the type of pads installed. City driving with frequent stops wears brakes much faster than highway miles. Towing also dramatically shortens pad and rotor life.

Do you always need to replace rotors with pads?

Is it safe to drive with bad brakes?
